According to the World Bank education is universally recognized as one of the most fundamental building blocks for
human development and poverty reduction. In addition it is regarded the proces of learning and assessing the cultural inheritance from the previous generations and adapting the
individual and social acts accordingly.
On the other hand the history is claimed to repeat itself. Our learning curve does not seem to be very efficient regarding human developement and poverty
We certainly have learned but it seems that learning something we replaced dynamically something of value with something of value and we have never learned all
necessaries to make global long range optimal use of assets we have inherited or found ready.
We have have never understood what we realy are. We may have been told but we never understood. We seem to have been guided in the direction of the predicted.
It is a good practice in teaching diodes and transistors in EE to list the properties of an ideal diode and an ideal transistor. The real ones are then
taught with their shortcomings. Let us adopt this method.
Ideal education should adapt itself to the dynamically changing social and individual needs of the pupil and the teacher.
Its time and place should be right for both parts.
It should aim to place the pupil/student to the most proper place in the social division of labor regarding his/her needs and abilities. This requires the
target to be known and the quidence to be closed loop.
It should be able to teach the learners what they are and what+why is expected from them, in an acceptable way.
For those of the students/pupils who are not of full age or sound mind, the acceptance is to be made by their responsibles without ignoring their
The social division of labor should be made long term considering that not the individual but the society, the humanity stays. Something not regenerable
is to be kept as it is in case of possibility of future demands.
Now the investigation of the shortcomings is due.
DYNAMICALLY CHANGING NEEDS
The figure at left is Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Depending on the individual living in an individualistic society or
in a collectivist society the hierarchy may be a little bit different but all of these needs are to be satisfied to a certain extent.
Air, water and nourishment are certainly indispensable; they are sure musts. The individual may (be forced to) live without sex but it has its costs. It is
then generally replaced by some form of (self) consumption.
Maslow seems to have here ignored the need to exercise. Human body has a dynamical balance. Balance of fluids, hromones etc. Traditionally it had to move
and it got used to movement. Without movement the balance shifts. Hearth, lungs and fluid channels can only develope if the body exercises enough.
Now an investigation of the education related problems that give rise to today's labile balance is due. By doing this we here implicitly assume that basic
needs of food and proper shelter are satisfied. If not, state should take the responsibility.
THE PRIMARY SCHOOL
In the first phase of education the pupil is asexual. He wants to grow up and behave like an adult but sex is not among his needs. He normally is much more
curious and eager to learn. He also has a definite ability to learn and a definite resistance to a definite speed of learning.
He also continues to acquire moral values.
The problems likely to arise are :
♦ Lack of knowledge to satisfy his curiousity.
♦ Lack of methods and equipment to teach him according to his subject dependent resistance to the speed of learning with failing impedance matching.
♦ Lack of exact knowledge of possible social division of labor he is supposed to be being prepared for and related acceptance problems even if this
♦ Too heavy a load not giving him time enough to think about the things being taught to him and understand why and what is being taught.
♦ Teaching of moral values taking care of long term collectivistical needs.
6th to 8th GRADES
The main problem of this period is puberty/adolescence.
A new basic need arises that has to be satisfied. It can not be satisfied alone or within the family, it involves other parties. A couple of conflicts are
unavoidable. A lot of new questions has to be answered.
The body has new orientations, it is pretty hard to focus the attention to the outer real world. It takes a lot of time to satisfy the new need if it can
be managed at all.
Boys may notice that girls want money. This may force them to change their future dreams regarding occupation
The child/adolescent may have accumulated problems from the previous phase. He may be under a load that he can not cope with.
Abstraction and other cognitive abilities develope during this period of life. Attention may be directed, its control
develops, and usually will be directed to the satisfaction of the newly percepted need.
The courses taken, the inhalt of the courses, require also more cognitive capability. In mathematics algebra, calculation with symbols/characters instead
of numbers begin. The relation between reality and abstraction must be taught very well, otherwise over-abstraction may occur as it is the case now in many of the theoretical
If we can abonden economical growth and each family contents itself with only a child for the next 50 years, we want to
make a proposal consisting of 4 paragraphs:
♦ To determine the needed personnel within the scope of social division of labor planned for the future. This may be done, considering the
emergency of the situation, temporarily if evaluated to be against the individual rights.
♦ To determine the abilities of the children before puberty and to try to prepare them for the right jobs for themselves. Making of course the
required/demanded corrections on the way. No problem if delay arises because % 10 of the citizens are enough to satisfy the basic needs.
♦ To let time to the students to understand the basics of the jobs they are being prepared for. Time is not scarce as mentioned before and the
next coworker may complement.
♦ A new form of loose marriage has to be introduced. Youngsters should be encouraged to marry this way without all the responsibilities of today's
christian/western marriages especially if the young couple has no kids. The cost of being a dissatisfied adolescent is mostly overshoots paid by the society. Hard marriages force to
dissatisfaction which again forces to overshoots/labile balance.
It may be the easiest and happiest period of education if 2 conditions are met:
♦ Basic needs are satisfied.
♦ The teachings of the previous period are well learned.
The hardest courses may be mathematics and physics. Mathematics, including geometry and trigonometry is in reality relatively easy. In physics the electric
current may well be assumed to be the current of charged particles. Charged classical particles.
The action at a distance forces can of course not be understood. It is overcomed if the question how is answered and not why. The experiments make life
easier. The student sees that the needle of the amperemeter moves and the lamps glow.
The basics of quantum phenomena are introduced but this may be taken, for at least the time being, easy.
The main problem may be probably best summarized with the following sentence: Life is grey, university is white and holywood
But without Caltech, Holywood could hardly be Holywood.
White contains a good deal of black in the subconscious. That produces a good deal of problems for the World.
In research the gifted's, the really gifted's share must increase vs. the studious' share. Win's share vs. want-to-know's share must decrease. I am not
sure if this could be done; but should be done if we want to survive.
Said in plain english, some hard workers do happen to get better grades then the really gifted and pass through the sieve. Hard work needs devoted time,
time against the
personal needs. The cost is paid by the society.
The main aim of R&D should be to know, to understand and then to reorder accordingly. Its aim can not be to promote consumption and earning money. Caltech's
motto is "The truth will make you easy." but it seems to work for the money/the power will make you easy.
Life, the real life that will be able to exist as long as the Earth exists demands a balanced extraversion-intraversion from the individual. Departments of
universities produce a good deal of excessive (hyper) introverts. Not certainly medical departments, medical people are mostly extroverts but a good deal of science departments.
Hyperintroverts are not healthy people. They may be healthy individuals but not healthy social people.
The pyramid structure is unhealthy/dangerous. It produces many dissatisfied people. This is so because the roads to continue are binary, 0 or 1. The not
selected may also contribute, they should be given a chance to contribute further and to gain their earnings. An expert cardiovascular surgeon needs equipement he can not provide
alone. If there are 10 candidates and 7 places everybody should be expected to to everything not to stay within the losing 3. Not only the moral and legal acts but everything.
Entering the right personal road and its continuity is essential. This should be provided.
A new functioning university making much more use of IT is to be designed. The distinction between science and technolgy, that basic science is open but
technology is secret or somehow kept a local property is to be avoided. Problems should be open and contributions to solutions should be accepted and paid.
Enough food, enough men/women and enough shelter are on Earth. They are still provided. Sharing and contribution must be essential. Reward and punishment
must be smoother. The new system should provide these.
