At first glance our situation is extremely well. The average man on Earth has some 5 servants working for him. Five
extremely clever servants.
Let us take my country, Turkey, as an exammple. Turkey has a generation capacity of 44 GWatt of power. With a population
of about 72 millions, per capita used/usable power is 610 Watts. The number above has a daily equivalent amount of 12.5 million calories. If we consider that a man uses about 2.5 million calories, the numbers
mean we have five servants working for us. Excluding the oil used for transportation. Turkey is just an average land. The States consumes about 1/3 rds of consumed energy in the World. There they have some 35 servants working for
INDUSTRIAL 30%, TRANSPORTATION 29%, RESIDENTIAL 22% and COMMERCIAL 19
Energy consumption by sector in the States is as given above in headline. The pictures just above are especially chosen
to underline the extremities.
That there are humans starving in other countries may easily be underestimated in spite of simultaneoity. It is more difficult to understand why
the possible efffects of this waste on the next generations of the same family/city/state/ country is underestimated or whoolly ignored.
This may be a response to the crisis our ancestors had in 1929-30. A continuation of the Keynesian policies we were forced to apply. But it is also clear
that a good amount of overshoot is being observed.
Due to this overshoot may John K. Galbraith have written "The Age of Uncertainity" after his well known "The Affluent Society".
THE INNER SHELL
PULLING OURSELVES by OUR BOOTSTRAPS
Most people are working hard. Me too. We seem to think we our pulling ourselves by our bootstarps. It is also
being claimed that we are cutting the branch we are on. To decide about, we need to know what is going globally on as we do our local bests.
Land is the base of every activity and cropland is the origin of economic activities.
Per capita cropland decreases. Per capita food production has
contradicted the doom-sayers of the 1960s due to success of green revolution. But the sustainability of this situation is more than questionable.
Manure is scarce. The land is forced to yield year after year about 2 kg. per square meter with the help of bout 15 g. of fertilizer. As a consequence it gets desertified. That
desertification is to be visually seen: The black turns to be yellowish year by year.
The oceans can of course not be prone to desertification without the help of Gog and Magog but Greenpeace claims that
within 40 years all the fish they have will be forced to migrate .
The climate gets warmer. Our share of this warming is not certain but we will have no need for stoves and radiators in a couple of decades; pity for their
producers. Less land and more people is also to be expected to make positive fedback.
Thanks to pills and of course the newly introduced productive hormones, estradiol, within vegetables and all for sale within green groceries of today, the
rate of increase of population has dropped. May not be enough but success is success. We can feel ourselves like Napoleon Bonaparte of 1810.
1812, 13 and 15 may be avoided if we do not continue this "bon" and this "apart".
So we see that the population incresed from 2000 to 2012 is about 1 billion.
Considering that the population of the whole world has stayed under this number up to the 19th century, this amount is huge and this increase can not
We seem to be sweeping the dust under the rug. The response is delayed but the magnitude of the problem increases meanwhile.
We voraciously consume resources, pollute the air and water, tear down natural habitats, introduce species into areas where they don’t belong and destroy ecosystems to the
point of causing millions of species to become endangered and, all too often, go extinct.
As the life gets easier and joyfull, no one is eager to be replaced by anyone else even if he happens to be his own offspring.
FRACTIONAL RESERVE BANKING SYSTEM
Paper money is introduced by Mephistopholes into the World as the savior in Faust. It may have been a real savior
for a couple of centuries.
In one of his works Jack London makes good ironie of paper money. One dictator in one of the small southern islands decides to introduce his own paper
money. When he is reminded of the phrase that "the Queen of England will pay ..." he said a similar phrase stays on his papers also.
It seems that this short term savior was not able to satisfy our greed. We do not speak of need bacause our basic needs are certainly satisfied but our
We seem to have found another means of creating addditional paper money. Just for our greeds. No need to make any more interpretations on the subject, a
lot is already made. Much is certainly observed.
THE ADDITIONAL 6 ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS
In addition to the increase of population, there are six other generally accepted environmental problems:
1- CO2 Levels in the Atmosphere.
2- Polar Sea Ice Loss.
3- Destruction of the Rain Forest.
4- Collapsing Fish Stock.
5- The Ocean Dead Zones.
6- Mammal Extinction.
THE DOOMSDAY CLOCK
The image above shows the history of the doomsday clock of atomic scientists. It is clickable. There are very many similar clocks all showing "3-5 minutes to midnight". We may
hope ourselves a good next day. Probably in another location of the space.
